Hirohito did not "beg for his life", it was the opposite. He asked to bear the punishment for all his people. He only begged that the people be spared. There's no excuse for atrocities that Japan committed against China and the rest of the Pacific rim nations, but in the interest of historical accuracy, it should be pointed out that he did not act as a coward.
