@daveramsey: Thirty years ago, I said you should never get a prenup.   I’ve changed my mind.   When there’s an extreme difference in net worth, a prenup can protect both people and keep extended family from turning the marriage into a financial circus.   A prenup should never replace trust, honesty or unity. But in the right situation, it can establish clear boundaries before you say, “I do.” #prenup

everyone who gets married has a prenuptial agreement. the government made a entire court system to enforce it. there is nothing wrong with every single person creating their own set of rules instead of using the governments. it does not matter how much you make. if anything someone with low income should protect themselves more because they have less to live on. a rich person will be fine no matter what in terms of food and housing. how many males have to live with their parents because of child support, taxes, spousal support.

Might consider changing your mind and increasing the emergency fund amount as well. $1000 doesn’t go as far as it used to 😳

Probably just had the worst call on this show. I called in with a simple question. They were questioning my love for my fiance over something that had nothing to do with my initial question. probably the worst phone call I've had with person in general

For two retired people prenups are needed to pass along resources to children. This is true even if net worth is the same.

the person you marry is never the person you divorce. if their is limited wealth difference maybe not bother but if you have wealth and don't protect it you are a fool

I would recommend prenups for EVERYONE. If you don’t have one, YES YOU DO: state law. The state decides what is fair. Why would we leave ANYTHING up the state to decide for us? I don’t trust the government with anything.

Divorce attorney here. Get a prenuptial agreement every single time. When you get married, you are agreeing to what the law will be in the state that you reside upon divorce. Even if you stay in the same state, the laws in your state can change and do change every single year. This is not legal advice.

In today's modern world, I'd suggest skipping marriage all together and basically be romantic roommates that split the cost of everything 50/50. What each of you do with the rest of your money is totally up to you.

Agreed but how do you handle it when one spouse will inherit a very large sum of money & vacation home after a couple is already married? The money can be specified in the Trust but should the couple then file a post up?
