I wonder how much of this tendency to define oneself as the opposite of another thing thing is shaped by our interaction with social media. I see this in people’s political leanings the most eg “I like X because it isn’t woke” etc. It doesn’t point to any positive beliefs or values in a certain direction. Signalling an affirrmative value statement on social media opens you up to a lot more criticism than simply critiquing another position, while keeping your own stance as vague as possible.
