He lived peacefully in Davao, serving and managing the city with the kind of governance that many Davaoeños appreciated. Then, he was pushed to run for president, with the hope that the same kind of leadership and governance he practiced in Davao could be extended to the entire country. Sometimes, I find myself wishing that Duterte had simply stayed in Davao, where his leadership had already made an impact on many people. But history gave us a different path. During difficult times like the Marawi incident and the COVID-19 pandemic, I often wonder what might have happened if someone else had been in charge. No one can truly know the answer, but these experiences shaped how many Filipinos viewed leadership and governance. As a Batangueñana, I have seen and experienced what good governance can mean to a community. I only hope that people can understand why some of us continue to support the leaders we believe have served us well. We may have different political beliefs, but I hope we can express them with understanding and respect rather than calling one another traitors. At the end of the day, we are all Filipinos, and we all want a better and safer country for ourselves, our families, and future generations.
