Parents fault. Parents who dont plan for their kids college pull back when the tuition topic comes up because of their guilt and let their kids destroy their future.

100% correct. If the name of the school matters for your job, then it might make sense. Engineering degree from MIT, Calt Tech etc is a good key. A nursing degree from UPenn vs state school still lands the same job.

18 year olds don't have the emotional maturity to take on 6 figures in debt. Many can't handle a car loan.

I wanted to go to a private university. I had all the stats - high test scores, valedictorian, extracurriculars. That private university didn’t give me much. But my two state universities gave me full rides. So glad at 18 I was smart enough to take the full ride. Was it my dream school? No. Do I have student loan debt? No.

I sat down with my senior and showed her a student loan repayment calculator. We plugged in debt and she saw what she would be paying back for the next 10-20 years and discussed how it would affect her life: no vacations, no kids, no fun. She chose a cheaper school.

THIS. You can have the college experience and establish relationships everywhere. The “college experience” isn’t worth going into debt over. People my age just don’t get it

My daughter was accepted into Georgetown, her dream school. My wife works for a respectable university 5 minutes from where we live and where the tuition for the children of employees was reduced 85%. I am grateful every day that my daughter chose the local

Leaving next week to take my 18 year old to college. His main concern was debt. He got a scholarship to a small college covering all 4 years of tuition, books and fees. May not be his dream school but he has a good chance of graduating with no debt. We really encouraged him to figure out how to go to college with little debt as possible. His first year is totally covered.

I had teachers and other adults caution me against joining the military when I graduated from high school. After 3 years, I use the GI bill to pay my way through a Big 10 college. I had the discipline to show up for class, and after 4 years on the deans list I graduated debt free. It was the best decision I ever made.

I 100% regret going to college. I tell every young person to live at home as long as you can and if you want to go to college to get a degree or certification go to a community college for as inexpensive as you can or get a job that helps with continuing education and have them pay for your school

The crap about a “dream school” is a huge problem. It’s a myth that we tell kids who will spend a lifetime paying back the money for that decision. It sucks, but the reality is that you can get a great education anywhere if you are willing to work for it.

I stayed on my son to keep up the. Requirements for free community college. he got his associates cum laude. then, did a cohort program with a prestigious university at 25% reduced tuition. he didn't experience the going away to college thing. But he got a prestigious degree with less than 30k debt which we are already chipping away at.
