They're not tracking PRODUCTIVITY or ACTIVITY just CONNECTIVITY.

I got called in for lack of activity, aka no mouse movement. I was literally with our prospective client for 6 hours and closed a multi-million dollar project we were desperately trying to secure. I quit the next day. No notice.

Why is there an assumption that mouse movement is productivity. Sometimes a walk gets more real thinking done than me sitting in front of my keyboard.

I'll be sending emails whole day "I'm sorry, I cannot attend the meeting as this will affect my 'away' time"
All typed by hand one by one.

Keyboard tracking is such a flawed way of measuring productivity. We use a third party who literally wouldn’t meet with us and discuss things in person because their productivity is measured via mouse movements. So I dumped their contract.

I once had a manager tell me to stay at my desk on lunch so I could cover their calls. I did & used my iPad. He then told me I’m not allowed to use my iPad at my desk. I said I was on lunch. He didn’t care. So I would take 20 min toilet breaks instead & blamed my IC. Nowt he could do about that 🤣

No one can think clearly if they have the constant latent narrative noise of “oh god I haven’t moved my mouse in 10 minutes, but I’m thinking.”

Luckily it was not my direct supervisor, but we had one team where the supervisor used teams to alert them when someone on their team went from green to yellow. I lost a good coworker because of it. he was dealing with customers and it went to yellow and she messaged him right away "why are you yellow?" he said he was with customers and she said it wasnt an excuse.
Teams also goes yellow if youre not using it, so if youre in a different program. micromanagement ruins jobs, teams and work environments.

THIS WAS 100000000% my last boss. She would question where I was for 15 minutes even if that included me reading documentation ON the computer.

I’m self employed and i don’t use my mouse for hours at a time while I’m with clients, on the phone, using pen and paper, reading, mind mapping , etc, etc. mouse movement is a poor indicator of productivity.

My boss was like “I never see you online” me “yes, I edit videos… the computer you gave me can’t run teams and Adobe at the same time. I only use teams on the web. You will never see me online” 😂

Mouse movement is ridiculous. I can appear less productive by doing my job or I can appear more productive while job hunting and online shopping for a new interview outfit.

If you're "active" every minute of every working hour, my assumption is that you're never taking time to take a step back and think critically about what you're working on and if there is a better solution/path forward; that's a much larger issue. Managers need to STOP making their teams feel like they need to be "productive" every minute of everyday otherwise they shouldn't be surprised when the output is a ton of slop.
