@emilyfoit: My Friday healthcare rant as someone who works in healthcare. If you couldn’t tell, I’m working on ENT this month. I obviously know there’s a wide range of prices, some insurances cover, etc but that’s not the case for a lot of people who just want to hear. #residency #residencylife #healthcare #healthcareworker #doctor
Hearing aids and dentures for the elderly are something I could rant about for a lifetime. They are never covered and unaffordable for most!

Yes they are expensive, but they are also an investment into their longterm health. You truly get what you pay for in a hearing aid. Unfortunately most insurance plans don’t pay for anything for audiology services except for the hearing test. So the price is usually factoring office visits and maintenance over a service plan of 1-3+ years in most offices (usually unlimited services within that time). I wish insurance covered the cost of hearings aids for all, or didn’t limit us on which devices we can sell to a patient. I personally never recommend costco/sams. Most of my patients bought devices from them and they were never programmed properly for their hearing needs and discouraged them from buying better technology from an actual audiology/ent practice. OR if they did end up buying better tech from me, they spent more money due to buying costco devices and then better devices that aren’t defeatured (which is why costco is cheap and are not the major manufacture hearing aids) major manufactures own a “sister company” where the hearing aids look the same as the better hearing aid, but the actual chip in the hearing aid is not great for active lifestyles. If people are home 95% of the time, sure Costco is a great option IF programmed correctly.

As someone that had to get bilateral hearing aids at 25 years old ( genetic condition) . I was shocked by the price. Thankfully my hospital I work at gave me a grant after I paid the deposit of 1,000. Total was 5,000. Changed my life

I work in healthcare and deal with insurance companies 60% of my day, and the other 40 is with providers on how we can help change things to see how to get it approved. Healthcare is the most lucrative business in the US for the CEOS and companies
