A lot of people getting student loans have a parent co-sign due to lack of credit history 😁 That might be what you’re thinking about. Co-signing helps a lot of people without credit history or with bad credit

Because its backed by the Treasury, not the FDIC. Nelnet is not deemed as a financial institution and are exempt from credit score processes as you can't get rid if student debt through bankruptcy either. Its tied to your SSN until its paid off forever.

i mean it kinda makes sense. kids don’t have credit in the first place. solution would be to have the checks be for their parents or guardians, but then how many kids would you have that aren’t able to get the loans they need due to their guardians’ poor decisions?
