I disagree with the transmen being seen as better men because we're often kicked out of queer spaces because we're 'as bad' as cisgender men 😭

everytime I heard the term "male socialized" I assumed the were talking about how as a trans woman I was raised in a society that is kinda run my toxic masculinity and forced me to learn to ignore or supress my emotions and didn't teach me basic life skills "cause that's a woman's job" and no that I am out it has left me with gaps in my knowledge and skills that I have to self teach. but it's clear that's not what they mean and maybe we need a term for that...

Gender socialization is a real thing. I grew up as a girl, and I had different expectations and rules growing up than my brothers did. I wasn't allowed to wear certain clothes, I wasn't allowed to swear, I wasn't even allowed to hangout with friends like my brothers were. I would get punished for acting like I'm not a girl. And that socialization is something that is in my adult years aswell. I am nonbinary now, not a girl anymore. But my experiences in my trans journey are different than a nonbinary person who grew up as a boy. And there's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't define us as adults, but we also can't pretend it doesn't exist. And you being "male socialized" doesn't make you any less of a woman. You are still a woman, but with different experiences. Gender socialization is a big problem in our society that we're all trying to unlearn, but pretending it doesn't exist won't fix the problem

I'm technically "female socialised" as a trans man, so people tend to view me as this "man with a girl brain" but at the same time i have the big 3 cluster b's so people also tend to say stuff like "ofc you're a trans man, no women would be as awful as you are" which is kinda confusing lol

transmasc here. i was socialised female in that i have expectations put on me to be quiet and pretty that are stunting me still. i was a weird girl with adhd and that specific experience still affects me. of course generalising an entire gender’s experiences is dumb, but we can’t deny the average or common effects that growing up a specific gender has on someone. my female socialisation being a negative experience is part of why i am as passionate about feminism as i am. the genders are not treated equally.

i use it around talking about patriarchy, as lot of people with a male socialization inherit these ways of thinking and acting in this toxic masculine way (which isnt biology, therefore those traits often stay after transition until deconstruction)

I feel like every time we figure out a better way to talk about things like sex, assigned gender, or socialization it ends up getting co-opted by transphobia and stops being useful. It's so frustrating. The way people use afab and amab as if they define who a person is rather than a thing that happened to them is one of the ones that pisses me off the most (and the fact people use it as essentially a woker way of saying male or female)

Have you read any actual theory about gender socialisation or are you just making assumptions? Neither is bad but they are different

This use to be a pretty common phrase in the trans community, at least when I transitioned 17 years ago, in my community in Utah, it was a pretty standard way of talking about experiencing misogyny and transphobia before transition at least for myself (trans man) and the community I came up in.

I know enough about Sociology to know the amount of things wrong with the way people are using "Socialization" in this context is too long for a TikTok comment. So instead I'll just say that this was a nice vid

it's really sad, cause I feel that materially it's an important topic, I believe in male/female socialization as a generally bad thing for everyone, but focusing only on trans people is kinda dumb and transphobic.

As a trans woman I am “female socialised”. Its called girlfriends that do pyjama parties to give you that experiences you missed as a teen. Wine, makeup, facials, nail art and soppy movies. ❤️

As others have said, I'm a trans person and I've definitely used the terms when talking about things like neurodivergence presenting differently based on gendered upbringing. I feel like having language to talk about that is useful. Is there an alternative we could use to male or female socialized that wouldn't have the negative connotations? Maybe "socialized to be a girl/boy" rather than male/female socialized? I don't know what the best term would be, but I do think finding nonharmful language for these ideas is still important.

I mean I think its valid to bring that up when we are talking about negative aspects of socialisation. Trans women may have problem with accesing and appoint their feelings and trans men might slut shame themself. Social transition will usually blur that up but for some the root may stay

But like even does the socialise part mean like they’ve always been a boy because society treats them like one even though they’re not?
