The sniper is revealed to be Eva, a woman driven mad by grief. Years earlier, her young daughter was accidentally shot and killed during an encounter with two drunk men carrying a rifle. Unable to cope with the loss, Eva retreated into the wilderness and began killing men who entered the forest, seeing them as symbols of the tragedy that destroyed her life. In the climax, only Roman and his brother Albert remain. Roman confronts Eva, manages to disarm her after a violent struggle, and leaves her defeated. Realising her quest for revenge is over and with nothing left to live for, Eva deliberately steps backwards off a cliff, ending her own life. Roman survives the ordeal, but the film closes on a bleak note, showing how grief and trauma consumed Eva and destroyed everyone caught in its path.
