@theknottygarden: 🌿 Think you need a huge property to grow a food forest? Think again. This is my urban backyard food forest, not a sprawling acreage or farm. Just an ordinary backyard that’s been designed to produce an abundance of food while working with nature. Right now it looks pretty quiet, but winter is when everything is resting, building healthy soil, and getting ready for a bountiful growing season ahead. A food forest is based on permaculture, a way of gardening that mimics the layers of a natural forest so plants support one another instead of competing. 🌳 The layers can include: • Canopy trees • Small fruit trees • Berry shrubs • Vines • Herbs • Ground covers • Root crops • Flowers for pollinators ✨ In this one border alone, I’m growing: • 🍎 2 apple trees • 🍑 1 peach tree • 🍇 3 mature grapevines • 🥝 Kiwi • Gooseberry • Elderberry • Goji berry • 🪴A variety of herbs • 🎃Several squash vines weaving through it all • 💐Flowers for pollinators and fresh bouquets Everything is grown organically, without chemical pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers. 🦋 It’s also a Certified Wildlife Habitat because biodiversity is one of the best ways to grow healthy food. Birds, bees, butterflies, beneficial insects, fungi, and healthy soil all work together to create a thriving ecosystem. You don’t need a huge space to grow a lot of food. You just need to make the most of the space you have. 🌱 Follow along for more tips on growing food, maximizing a small space, and creating an abundant backyard garden. ✍️💚 Want to start growing from seed?
