If you need to prepare 40 mEq of KCl in Normal Saline (NS), the dilution depends on the concentration of the KCl vial and the route of administration. Common examples: If your KCl is 2 mEq/mL (20 mEq in 10 mL): 40 mEq = 20 mL of KCl Dilute in 500 mL NS for peripheral IV (commonly used), or 250–500 mL NS depending on the prescribed infusion rate and whether the line is central or peripheral. If your KCl is 1 mEq/mL (10 mEq in 10 mL): 40 mEq = 40 mL of KCl Dilute in 500 mL NS (or as prescribed). Important safety points: Never give KCl as an IV push or bolus. Peripheral IV: usually no more than 10 mEq/hour and concentrations are typically kept at ≤40 mEq/L unless local policy allows otherwise. Central venous line with cardiac monitoring may allow higher concentrations or faster rates under physician order and hospital protocol
