As an educator, I appreciate your take, but parents need to parent. Schools across this country are seeing waves and waves of children who have little respect and no discipline. It’s difficult to educate when children are up running around, shouting, throwing chairs, and cursing at the adults in the room. It starts at home. Parents need to parent.

College professors are saying incoming freshman cannot read, tell time, do simple math. But they think they should pass the class just because they showed up. WE did that. We lowered the bar as far as possible, and they met it. Society is going to reap what we have sown, because the future does not look pretty.

I got really excited over the new Pompeii documentary hosted by Tom Hiddleston (Loki if y'all don't know) .... my son walked in on me watching it and I explained how excited I was for it. He didn't know about Pompeii. I was dumbfounded. Kids don't have things to get them excited to learn. I loved learning history. There were other things I really loved as well. But we had no practical classes. This is so sad.

Functional skills like cooking and wood shop are amazing, but math, science, and literature developed different parts of your brain. (Logic, planning, problem solving, interpersonal communication etc)

My kids are in HS. They haven’t read an actual book—the entire thing—in class or as a part of a class, since third grade, and that was a one-time occurrence. There are no class novels anymore, ever. Only excerpts, followed up by practice state test questions. I sincerely think this has affected not only literacy, but also empathy, emotional intelligence, and basic people skills.

Not just fed, but fed good healthy food that nourishes their mind and body. Not honey buns and Gatorade for breakfast. Ugh it breaks my heart seeing these kids eating this. And I know it is better than nothing, but is it really. Try teaching a 7th grade boy Math after he has consumed more sugar in one meal than he should consume in an entire week. This guy needs to be streaming in every district across the nation for PD instead of the sticky notes.

Homeschool mom here…..my kids are learning so much more than just math and reading. We’re homesteading (sewing, cooking, building chicken coops, planting crops, harvesting crops, canning and preserving). Money management and taxes, how to budget and pay bills. My kids will have real life skills. We call it functional education. My kids also play soccer, gymnastics and golf. They play and run, they tell me they’re “bored” so instead of handing them a tablet I hand them a book or tell them to go play outside. There’s hope for the future, but parents are going to have to step up and fill in the gaps. Quit relying on others to parent and raise your children.

I was part of the No Child Left Behind generation I got so frustrated that I wasn't learning anything that my mother pulled me out of the school system and homeschooled me all through High School I learned more from my own parents than I ever would have in the school system on paper I'm a dumbass but in reality A Step Above the Rest of My Generation
