I’m never not gonna not tell people. It’s a slippery slope into no one knowing you’re getting abused

I believe you should always talk to your trusted friends about what’s going on in your marriage in case you think something is normal when it’s not. Hearing “that’s not normal” or “this is a red flag” could actually save your life.

WHAT THERAPIST TOLD YOU THIS?!? I would have reported them tbh. That is an isolation tactic and really unethical to bring forward into a marriage. This is how women get trapped, and any board certified counselor would know this.

My ex husband would tell everyone what I said during fights, but never what had lead up to that point. Suddenly when I started telling people what was going on before I lost it, he wanted to keep relationship problems between us.

I find this whole “don’t say anything about your husband or marriage to anyone” a very manipulative tactic. Of course some things are personal and you should be tactful with how you discuss things but to say absolutely nothing to nobody is the worst thing you can do. Especially since it’s very normal for a marriage to have ups and downs. Also, if you have a good relationship with your mother, you tell her everything. And I mean everything. That your mom

I think there's a difference between gossiping and seeking support and additional perspective from supportive people in your life.

i think if you aren't okay with the people you're gossiping to seeing your partner as a human being with depth and flaws maybe your partner has a little bit too much depth and flaws and you should leave

The rule of thumb is that you need to be seeking support and advice rather than seeking to insult them. If you find yourself saying “They’re so annoying, they’re so stupid, they’re so weird”, you’re shit-talking. If you’re saying things like “I just want to understand why they do this, I feel so hurt because of this action, I don’t know how to approach a conversation about when they do that”, chances are you’re seeking advice on how to strengthen your relationship. There has to be a level of respect in the way you’re talking about them, even when you’re mad or upset with them. You need to be talking about it because you love being with them, not because you hate it

hot take gossiping is GOOD you get other people's advice and outside opinions on it cause sometimes you are simply too close to the subject to look at it objectively, and other married people probably have gone thru the same/ similar things and can tell you how THEY got thru it

this is true about friends to me too tbh. i don't mind at all if my friends talk "shit" about me and vent to others, as long as it's not lies or things i told them in confidence. i think its healthy to air put your thoughts and i don't need to hear about every single little grievance my loved ones have with me if they don't wanna tell me 😭😭

well gossip usually more referrs to private lives stuff.....pillow talk as it were....dont discuss blades that can be used against your partner...the things they do to you is different because youre talking about yourself....if that makes sense.

yes exactly! and take this with a grain of salt, but be intentional about the people you surround yourself with, not only for the obvious reasons, but they will set your standards and expectations. they will set an example for you wether you realise or not, especially with relationships!

a more accurate rule is don't tell biased stories about your partner. the biggest reason for the rule is someone would say he never does the dishes or helps out but actually he just doesn't finish them by when she thinks they should be done . thats deferent from i can't ask him to do the dishes without it turning into a screaming match

I think you should talk openly about problems but with one or two carefully selected few and it should’t be a girls dinner converation topic

don't gossip unless it's abuse. and speaking honestly and fairly is never gossip. gossiping might have prevented my marriage which would have been a great thing for me.
