Odysseus, in the movie, never tells Polyphemus his name. How did Poseidon know who to curse? The gods are not omnipotent in Greek mythology. In the original telling, Odysseus tells the Cyclops his name after he escapes. The Cyclops then asks his father to curse Odysseus. Everything that happens from that point on is because of odysseus's hubris.
