@darlene_liebman: Do you know the story behind the Pink Palazzo in the West Village? Depending on who you ask, Palazzo Chupi is either a masterpiece of artistic vision or one of New York's most controversial buildings. While much of the city embraced sleek glass towers, artist Julian Schnabel had a different idea. In the early 2000s, he transformed a 1915 horse stable into a Venetian-inspired palazzo finished in what he calls "Pompeii Red." The name "Chupi" isn't Italian at all. It's a nickname for his wife, inspired by the Spanish candy Chupa Chups. Knowing the neighborhood was about to be rezoned with stricter height limits, Schnabel moved fast. Legend has it he sketched the design in just 15 minutes before construction began on the 170-foot building, complete with soaring ceilings, arched loggias, and handcrafted details rarely seen in new construction. When Palazzo Chupi debuted in 2008, it divided New Yorkers. Some called it an eyesore. Others hailed it as a work of art. Today, it remains one of Manhattan's most recognizable private residences and proof that the city's boldest architecture often sparks the biggest debates.
