In 1885, after the Berlin Conference, King Leopold II of Belgium gained control of a vast territory in Central Africa known as the Congo Free State. Despite its name, the region was neither free nor self-governing—it was effectively the personal possession of the Belgian king. Leopold presented his rule as a humanitarian and civilising mission, but the reality was a system of forced labour built around the booming global demand for rubber. Congolese communities were compelled to meet strict production quotas, often under threat of violence. Those who failed to meet targets faced brutal punishments, including beatings, hostage-taking, village destruction and mutilation. The severing of hands became one of the most infamous symbols of the regime's brutality. While historians continue to debate the exact death toll due to limited population records, many estimate that millions of Congolese died between 1885 and 1908 as a result of violence, disease, starvation, displacement and declining birth rates. Estimates commonly cited by scholars reach around 10 million lives lost.
