(Commenting from Australia) when we are young, we learn new words and get told what they mean. Then we trust that meaning holds true to that word. So to me, organic is natural, or without pesticides/chemicals. I didn’t consider that some people sat at a table in an office and said “in this context, organic can also mean…”. Thank you for the info, I’m off to find some local farmers

I’m not in the US, but I moved from the Caribbean to Canada two years ago. I’m 22, and ever since, my body has been reacting to foods I’ve eaten my whole life. I now have frequent acne breakouts (not even as teenagers did I ever suffer from acne), digestive issues, constant bloating, constipation, the list literally goes on (and I’m an athlete, I work out rigorously). Back home, I grew up eating eggs and chicken from my aunt’s backyard, fresh fruits and vegetables grown at home, beef and milk from cows I literally see from my window, and pork from pigs I helped feed. I no longer know what I’m putting into my body and it’s honestly scary.

Be careful. People sadly disappear for exposing things like this.

As someone who has a backyard flock of six chickens, it absolutely breaks my heart how chickens are treated in this country.

it’s so great to hear you validate everything i’ve told my partner! i grew up on a small dairy farm that was sold in the late 90s to a large dairy producer. i saw what happened. my grandpa was a pig farmer and i saw what happened when he passed and our heritage farm was sold. my nephew is a vet and gets calls to a large chicken egg producer in michigan and he’s told me stories. i walked a big, famous chicken processing plant about 20 yrs ago (they were my employer’s client) and 20 years ago i started raising my own chickens. i only buy beef from my college friend’s brother. i grow as many of my herbs and veggies as possible. i lament that i wasn’t an adult when my family farm was sold as i would have bought it and fought to keep it viable. i know i am lucky to be able to do this. i wish this was an option for everyone
