@charlielikeswater: Zero bycatch, zero habitat disturbance, fast as lightning (literally) and one single fish at a time. That is the modern day harpoon fishery in New England. What other methods of take can claim the same? Diving for bay scallops, maybe. What gets me riled up is when someone says this seems barbaric. What they mean is it’s unfamiliar, or that they failed to compare it to other more common but objectively more barbaric methods in their head before speaking. Or they love eating tuna but could never imagine themselves harpooning one, so therefore it’s barbaric. You don’t need to harpoon a tuna to eat tuna, but you should be a vegetarian if you can’t stomach how the tuna made it onto your plate. Anyways…harpoon boats are also called stickboats. They’re light and they’re fast, No rod holders, outriggers, or live wells. Built for one purpose. Putting tuna onto your plate.
