yes, fully agree. but we also have to make sure we don't confuse dignity with respect. that person's basic human dignity is not up for debate. but that doesn't mean they automatically deserve respect. and I feel a lot of people confuse the two and think we are saying we must respect everyone. no. those are not the same.

the "what about xxx?" argument i fear it installs an idea of having to earn those rights, which is contradictory because yk human rights shouldn't have to be earned but given beyond of everything but being a human. it is also very prone to become oppression, because if a person "loses" theirs human rights it's under a certain law/regulation that cloud be probably changed and we all know what happens when people do not have human rights. (sorry if there are any mistakes but English is my second language) (also this has nothing to do with this topic but i really like Robyn's hair)

there was a natural disaster that hit where I lived someone close to me checked on their abusive ex-husband's house after the disaster because he's still a person and she couldn't not care about his continued existence even though she wanted him to not be near her ever again. these are the values I was raised with even after we left the church.

I think similarly about referring to awful people as "not really human" or "less than human" because the moment we start viewing our enemy as subhuman is when we become as bad as them and open up to enacting our own horrific acts of violence

Yep. It's why you cannot advocate for a 💀 penalty, for instance. Because (we are pretending AI doesn't exist yet) even if you have recorded, irrefutable proof someone did something horrific along with DNA and all kinds of other proof, we know that having that penalty in place will be used on OTHER people without that same level of proof because it's impossible to write laws without loopholes and back doors. Ergo, no 💀 penalty. Nevermind that it's morally wrong to take another's life.

And in some cases it can be argued that some of the horrible things some people have done, in many cases have been due to a lack of basic rightsand the kind of love and respect they needed!! So yes, basic rights won't stop things that have already been done, nothing can. But it can prevent and often stop things from happening again in the future. And that will be good for all of us. 😊
