Think about it from his perspective. He’s not gonna understand why he’s stuck in this room for who knows how long, watching his mom potentially cry, scream and be in pain. He’s not old enough to understand, and it might genuinely scare him and he may associate that negative feeling with his new sibling

it’s crazy that people are calling this weird. When there are people like me who have no choice but to bring their oldest. I live in Houston, TX. It is only me my son and my fiancé. I have no one to watch him. So I have no choice but to bring him. I wish people would be more considered of others situation 😐!!

No. There’s no where for him to wait. They won’t let him back with you.

I mean he could be in the hospital while someone else is watching him but I don’t think it would be a good idea to have him in the actual room, would just distress him seeing you in pain/the process of giving birth

i did not gaf when my mom went to have my brother. i had a fun movie night spoiled endlessly by my grandparents! i do remember being jealous after he came home, be sure to keep your toddlers routines as normal as possible. my parents would take longer to come tuck me in (i understand why now as an adult lmfao) but it did make me feel a bit sad as a 5yr old

I was born at home. My brother's were both there. The 1 that just turned 6 it was the coolest thing ever. The 4 year old.... trama drama.

I think it’s unfair to him and kinda selfish. He’s going to be in the room for hours and get antsy and bored . Also what about when you’re having the baby … NOBODY is going to be able to give him attention in that moment the focus literally HAS to be you and the baby . It’s better to get a babysitter.

That would scare the hell out of him. And god forbid something terrible happens to either you or baby, he doesn’t need to see that and you wouldn’t want him there for it. I went into labor at 7pm after we had done bath, we took him to grandma and then went to the hospital and she brought him to us the next day. Dad took him home. Your second labor also shouldn’t take as long! It’ll just be a few hours, maybe one day!❤️❤️

I tried to and my daughter didn’t get to stay for the birth of her brother which is fine . I did however feel every single emotion under the sun at the time about it .

I get the anxiety of not wanting to leave your first baby but you’re going to need rest 🫶🏼 caring for a toddler and a newborn in a tiny hospital room after pushing out a baby is not going to be good for you!

I don’t want to leave mine either but it’s not really fair to make a toddler witness a birth😭

totally get this feeling. if you deliver at a birth center instead of a hospital, you may have the option to bring him (he will need his own designated support person prepared to care for him). but if hospital is what you're doing by necessity or choice, he cannot come. and that's ok! find him someone wonderful to stay with and it will be so totally fine.

I personally wouldn’t, they don’t understand why you’re in pain or grunting and hospitals in general aren’t fun for them.

idk, personally I would find a sitter if you can. Theres a lot that goes on during labor and it can be hard for a toddler to be there.

No. And most hospitals won’t let you. Some won’t even let them on the ward to visit

it’s how you’re looking at it. you see it as a day you’re abandoning them for your other baby and they could potentially have one of the greatest days of their childhood with grandparents, uncles/aunts, cousins etc.

I love my toddler but the thought of having her around and being responsible for her while I’m in active labor sounds absolutely terrible. I’d feel better if she’s safe at home with grandma.

Don’t do it. Labor and delivery can be a scary place with a lot of noise and screaming. Even if your delivery is picture perfect, no one says your neighbors will be. And imagine the utter terror they will feel if something goes wrong and you are whisked away to surgery. No toddler will be comfortable being in a place not meant for them. Trust me. - Mom of 5.

As someone who was forced to be in the room when my my had my brother when i was 5, don’t take them, it was terrible and i was confused why my mom was in pain, it was very traumatic

I had family members watch my toddler in the waiting room (huge) or hallways or the cafeteria, etc while I gave birth. Then once baby was settled, we brought my first born in to meet him. He slept on the pull out couch with dad & we left the next morning

I’m only about to be a first time mom but maybe if you could have a family member watch them nearby? Like a park or something near the hospital or just in the waiting room. That way you can have them visit in with you if there are moments you’re feeling up to it without fully exposing your toddler to the full pain and stress of labor
