Isabella Parker :
@Isabella Parker: Atomic habits talks about something similar in how we should build systems instead of goals and try to have them resonate with our identity. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, you will probably train and accomplish it but after the race is finished your efforts will greatly diminish because your goal had an end that was achieved. So instead, focusing less goals and more on building the systems and deciding you want to be a runner is more sustainable because it is not a goal with and endpoint but more so a part of your lifestyle and identity.

Obsessive optimization is something I also struggle with — and it can end up being paralyzing and exhausting. You’re always trying to do all the things you need to do in the most perfect way. I love this framing of inviting a rhythm into your life instead of a stringent routine.

I’m the exact same way’ my type A is soooo bad but good at the same time. I’m extremely disciplined but my anxiety is always at an all time high.

Type A is high functioning anxiety, strict routines provide a (false) sense of control that feels like regulation.

Options are a large part of having rhythm versus a rigid routine. As you’re building a routine, you should have a low routine for the days that you may not be able to accomplish everything. That’s why knowing your broader core values and the main purpose of your routine is very important. For example, something that I like to do is I try to move my body at least one time a day. In my “utopian” routine I like to go to my 1 hr morning workout classes, but if I’m unable to my low routine options are go for a 30 min walk or follow a YouTube video workout routine that’s 20 minutes. When I understood that my core value is to move my body, my routine becomes more fluid because moving my body can be anything. There is a certain type of power in giving yourself options in a routine that helps you build that rhythm.

I like to call myself a “reformed type a” but I think the proper term is having rhythm now.

The best way I’ve heard it explained is routine isn’t a perfect balance but a healthy tension. It has changed the way I view it. Good vid bro

wait I love this take as someone who loves rhythm and ritual but cannot stick to a routine to save my life hahaha. also reminds me of the fact that having new and novel experiences affects perception of time and how we remember things, and maybe strict routine allows less space for that

For me it’s good to have habits which I don’t have do every day. For example 5 days of 7 it usually give me more space. But of course we shouldn’t be prisoner of our habits. But rhythm sound nice, but for me it can be Pilates instead of gym. Journaling or meditation

This is awesome for thinking about menstrual cycles too! It’s so easy to be hard on ourselves when we don’t feel the same those weeks and that we can’t accomplish the same or lift the same weight etc… we need harmony not the strict routine! ✨

This is spot on. Once the routine has not went my way or it’s not going accordingly I can for sure see my mode shift and I start beating myself up. We are only human right ? Great video dude
