@thekidsdoctor: In boys - puberty is classed as being ‘early’ if it starts before the age of 9 years old. You may hear medical professionals refer to it as ‘precocious puberty’ The first change in boys is usually enlargement of the testicles but understandably many parents don’t spot this change. It’s often only when other features develop like deepening of the voice, a large growth spurt, acne, underarm or pubic hair etc. that it’s noticed. There is a LOT of information for medical professionals to consider when seeing a child with possible early puberty as there are many potential causes but here is what you need to remember: 👩🏻‍⚕️ If you notice any of these signs in your boy before age 9 then have them seen. The GP is the most appropriate starting point for that. 👍 It is particularly important to have boys seen with this as there are many potential causes but in boys we find underlying medical causes much more commonly than in girls (where we often don’t find any worrying underlying cause) How it will be investigated depends on the history and findings on physical examination but might include things like: - Blood tests - X-ray of the wrist to determine bone age - Other imaging like ultrasounds of testicles or brain imaging Not everyone will need all of these investigations they are just some examples. Would you have known what age to worry? Send this to any mums with boys! #childhealth #paediatrics #precociouspuberty #puberty #thekidsdoctor

My 8 year old son had the worst BO one Friday, it continued just for that one weekend and hasn’t returned since, is this just his body fluctuating with hormones? This was a few months back and he’s 9 soon!

My son has strong BO and is very muscular. He has hairy legs too (not sure if that’s related to him being darker skinned) No pubic hair - should i get him checked?

My son has just turned 10 and I’ve noticed that his nipples have gotten bigger? Is this normal? He’s the first boy in our family and I’m a solo parent.

eyebrows!! they get fuller and darker. if the boy or parent respect his privacy, eyebrows start changing quite early in the process. good indicator

My son is 9 and 10 in August. He has worn deodorant for smelling for approx 12 months. In last couple of months he has had a few ‘hairs’ sprout under arms and pubic etc. I was panicked when I saw these but I think it’s normal although he still feels like a baby to me…is it normal? X

Does it matter if they start puberty early? Some girls can start their period around the same age

My son has just turned 10 and I’m recognising some of the same things as his eldest brother when he went through puberty. He has got spots and gets the rage flashes. Rightly or wrongly I just assumed it was earlyish but nothing to worry about.

My son had enlarged testicles and it turned out the tubes his testicles came down in didn’t close up properly and he was having abdominal fluid filling up his scrotum like a hernia. Poor lad needs to have surgery to close them
