I can relate, I wasĀ diagnosed at 55, and when IĀ called my momĀ to tell her, she casually said, "You were diagnosedĀ when you wereĀ 7." I was stunned.Ā They knew, butĀ nothing changed. InsteadĀ of getting support, I spent myĀ whole life masking toĀ avoid being beatenĀ and being calledĀ lazy and stupid. Looking back, it'sĀ heartbreaking to realizeĀ how much energyĀ went into survivingĀ instead of beingĀ understood. I was dx in grief counseling and luckily she extended my therapy to grieve my disappointment.

Any one else realize how much work & energy went in to supressing your anxiety and masking your adhd by being a perfectionist and one day simply stopped doing those things and now life is, for lack of a better word, a complete shitshow... yet its like you already used up your alloted energy years ago, now you just dont gaf? šŸ˜‚ Oh, just me??

I'm almost 58,and was diagnosed at 52. Always knew, but was considered lazy or a "problem" growing up. Menopause exacerbated it a million %. I mourned for myself, how different my life could have been

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 45. I’ve had anxiety my whole life. The antidepressants I was prescribed never worked. The ADHD specialist I went to said the anxiety I was experiencing was RSD. I looked for answers for over 25 years. I would tell mental health professionals what I was experiencing and they missed it. I’m feeling much better now

Thinking there was something wrong with weirdo me all these years. My symptoms worsened during menopause. Now at age 56 I finally know ADHD. After hating myself for decades, Ive come to appreciate my weirdo self and despite not fitting into mainstream society. i realized I dont want to. I found my society and all of you are amazing!!!!!

I was assessed for having sensory sensitivities, frequent ā€œtemper tantrumsā€, and was hard to control as a young child. I was pulled out of public school when they brought up putting me on an IEP and put into Catholic school. God forbid as a 7 year old I’d bring embarrassment to the family for having a label. The doctor told my parents I’d grow out of it, to withhold all sugar, and to strengthen discipline. I was constantly singled out and made to feel like I wasn’t wanted, didn’t belong anywhere, and was just a nuisance

I’m 56 and was just diagnosed 2 years ago. I struggled my entire life and hid it from everyone. Went to college for 5 years and still didn’t get a degree. I’ve worked in customer service bcos I knew I had to become accustomed to hard work. It’s been a helluva ride. The diagnosis calmed me and saddened me but I can breathe finally.
