You should have to pass a test before you can legally home school your kids

In the South, you CANNOT find a private school that isn’t Christian. It’s impossible. Plus, private school teachers don’t even have to be certified! Public school teachers do!!

To add: I believe some states neglect their education intentionally to keep wages down, to invite more private sector influence, to have more “control” of the populous.

As a teacher I may be biased but homeschool should be illegal. I had to get a degree and student teacher and test for content knowledge to be able to teach and I’m still improving every year. The thought that a parent can be sufficient for every content group at every grade level is absurd. Even with the help of computer programs it’s still not enough.

I wonder if the lower test scores starting in 2015 has to do with the implementation of chromebooks.

I teach middle school. Parents pull them to “homeschool” because they are tired of them getting in trouble, getting them up in the AM, or mad about attendance letters. Then about 3 months later they are back because their parents realize they don’t know the material either.

us substitute teachers have to pass an exam to be able to teach! I think patents who homeschool should be taking the same exam to be qualified and equipped to substitute teach!

Also private school teachers are not required to have teaching credentials or even a degree for that matter.

I was homeschooled for religious reasons. It screwed up my life. My mom was a teacher so she knew what to do up to about fourth grade, but after that I was pretty much figuring out stuff I didn’t understand on my own. I saw so many parents with NO experience whatsoever doing the same thing and their kids were severely undereducated.

Guys, guys…. It all gonna be fine when the Dept. of Education gets folded into the Department of War and all public school becomes military academies with guaranteed enlistment.

As a public school teacher, I mostly agree with you. Especially the part that less educated people tend to vote a certain way. Didn’t he say one time that he loved the less educated?! I wonder why…. Also though, I see so many flaws in the public school system. A requirement to teach curriculums when teachers know there are better ways to teach the kids. Troubled kids who disrupt the learning environment constantly for the rest and no consequences are hardly ever given. And those are only 2 of many many many issues. Neither system is perfect and I’ve contemplated homeschooling my own kids when I have them.

As someone who teaches, IVE SEEN IT W MY OWN EYES!!!!! But yes, let’s worry about labeling the school supplies, not making sure the kids are actually learning 🙄🫠

as a parent who knows kids in a few private schools near me, they are not doing much better than public schools (not by a margin)

Agreed. I’ve got nothing against homeschooling, but I do believe there needs way more regulation. Public schools definitely need improvements and changes but it would be foolish and shortsighted to try and get rid of them. A well educated population benefits us all.

my husband tried to make an argument for homeschooling. I (very gently but slightly mean) ripped into him about how we both graduated with less an 2.0 gpas and had huge overlapping gaps in our understanding/knowledge. Our kids are absolutely going to public school and he can supplement as much as he wants at home
