The Odyssey (2026) Christopher Nolan shot over two million feet of film to tell the story of Odysseus's journey home. Three years after Oppenheimer, the director returned with the most expensive project of his entire career, shot entirely on brand new IMAX 70mm cameras, the first time Homer's poem has ever been brought to this format. Production ran for ninety-one consecutive days across Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Malta, moving countries every couple of weeks. Nolan wanted to physically put Matt Damon's cast out on real waves, in real locations, rather than rebuild everything on a soundstage. He described conditions at sea as constantly shifting, making every day of filming vast, terrifying, and wonderful all at once, exactly the kind of journey into the unknown he wanted audiences to feel. The image chosen as the film's visual symbol, the Trojan Horse, isn't the towering, imposing colossus usually depicted. It's half-submerged, filthy, looking more like a mistake than a monument, with soldiers crammed inside breathing through straws as water rises around them, waiting in silence for the Trojans to drag it through the city's walls. A bold image, even for someone like Nolan.
