I can do the same with a regular nail on or old work box.....you can screw a box to the stud as long as there are no exposed threads inside the box.

Not if you use a dimmer of fan control it will not let you sit the plate flat on the wall

Why are you using a smart box as old work? Smart boxes should be used on a rough when you might need to make adjustments to the depth of the box afterwards. Like the homeowner decided to put a tile backsplash up after they told you they were only doing drywall

I do keep some screw ins on my van just in case I’m roughing in and I need a single gang to go between two studs that are only a couple inches apart. Then they come in clutch

I’d prefer smart boxes for outlets as it feels more secure than just relying on the drywall when people plug things in. People do be stupid.

Can you just save money and screw a nail on from the inside you even gain more room without those tabs on the inside I cut the nails tabs and pull the nails

I like the old work with switches. I don't trust the sheetrock sandwich if people get rough plugging things in.

Very true. The ones I carry in the van have both options available; Morris SmarToggle I think they’re called

I like the side screw out box only for plaster left when I find a stud. Or if I know there’s a stud I’ll use it but, the other box, the Blue old work absolutely all day every day!

Hate old works boxes, seen too many get loose or the sheetrock brakes from use
