Karina had never been jealous. Not once. Practically every guy in school liked her. A lot of girls too. Confessions weren't rare—people left chocolates, flowers, handwritten letters. One girl even made her a playlist. Karina turned most of them down. Not because she thought she was above them. She just... felt nothing. A date here, a week‑long relationship there, but nothing stuck. She liked the attention, not the people. Despite being one of the most popular students in school, her best friend was Winter—which confused everyone. Winter was shy, awkward, the type to apologize when someone else bumped into her. Meanwhile Karina knew half the school. But they'd been glued together since middle school. Karina dragged Winter everywhere. Lunch, shopping, study sessions, movie nights. Winter always came. Karina always expected her to. Then a new girl transferred in. Kazuha. Friendly. Smart. Easy to talk to. The kind of person who made strangers feel like old friends. And for whatever reason, she and Winter clicked instantly. They talked between classes. Sat together at lunch. Hung out after school. It all happened so naturally that no one noticed. Except Karina. The first time she felt something weird, she ignored it. Winter and Kazuha were in the library just doing homework. Karina just so happened to be there—at least that's what she told herself. Definitely not hiding behind a bookshelf watching them. Her eyes drifted to the drinks beside them—two iced coffees from the café she and Winter always went to. Every Friday. Without fail. Something twisted in her stomach. She left before they saw her. The second time was a week later. Winter's laugh echoed from a classroom—the high pitched one she always tried to hide. Karina peeked in. Winter was doubled over, and Kazuha was watching her like she was the funniest person alive. Karina frowned.

Karina peeked in. Winter was doubled over, and Kazuha was watching her like she was the funniest person alive. Karina frowned. "What the hell…” She walked away. Winter's laughter followed her down the hall. The third time actually hurt. Five days. Five whole days without hanging out. Karina finally caved and texted: "Heyyyy. The new Korean BBQ place downtown opened. I'll be at your house in ten. Get ready." A minute later: "Sorryyy. I'm at Kazuha's studying math. Maybe tomorrow?" Karina blinked. Read it again. "She's teaching me integrals." Her jaw tightened. But I teach you math... By then, Kazuha was officially her enemy. Not that Kazuha knew. Karina threw petty looks, brushed past her in hallways, pulled Winter into conversations whenever Kazuha was beside her. Stuff she'd make fun of anyone else for doing. And Kazuha never reacted. Just smiled and went back to Winter. Which somehow made it worse. The final straw came two weeks later. Karina spotted them in the hallway—Winter and Kazuha, holding hands. Skipping. Actually skipping. Laughing so hard they almost hit a wall. Karina stopped walking. Something snapped. Winter brightened when she saw her. "Oh! Hey, Karina!" "...Hey." Karina's eyes dropped to their hands. Then to Kazuha. "What is she doing here?" Winter's smile faltered. "We were about to go hang out—" "Winter. We need to talk. Privately." Kazuha crossed her arms. "Why can't you say it here?" "Because it doesn't involve you." "Oh." Kazuha raised an eyebrow. "So it *is* about me." Karina let out a humorless laugh. "As if we'd waste time talking about you." "Guys," Winter cut in, annoyed. "Enough." She shot Kazuha an apologetic look. "Just give us a minute." Kazuha sighed. "Fine." Karina grabbed Winter's hand and dragged her down the hall. "Ow— Karina!" She pulled Winter into an empty classroom and shut the door. Winter winced, rubbing her wrist.  "Ow! What is your problem?" Karina turned on her immediately.  "Why are you hanging out with her so much?" "What?" "Kazuha." Her voice was sharper than she meant. "She's always with you." "Because she's my friend?"
