And yet-I got called into HR because I was singing during work one day (I sing all the time). But that day as I was trying to figure WTF was going on, I started singing “just keep swimming swimming swimming” (my daughter was in Finding Nemo the musical so I heard that song ALL the time) and my coworker said I was singing it to call her dumb. Maybe I should have just whistled

Because developmentally, she’s a child, trying to grow up. You can track Eric Erickson’s stages of development throughout the film. She starts out at the mental age of about 3, when she realizes that her mother is a separate person, with a different agenda from herself. She moves into exploration of her own, separate identity, to building self-esteem from achieving tasks, at the mental age of 6-11. As she enters adolescence she learns about boundaries, and not just to blindly do what she’s told (by the Mom/Witch). At the end of the film, she’s a young adult, struggling with isolation vs intimacy. In the end, she’s a young successfully pair bonds, and moves into full adulthood.
