Ironically, the med was for treatment of hepatitis.

As a patient I would have sued them for giving me pills that had been contaminated by biohazard material 🤮

I would’ve 100000% refused to give those pills. I’d say to my supervisor that if she wants to approve it, she can give them herself with her signature in the MAR

Pharmacy should have packaged them in individual packaging considering how much $ they cost. In 21 years as a RN I have never gotten pills out of a bottle.

Yes, the nurse always gets the short end of the stick - unfortunately. On the bright side, the board of nursing seems to be the only professional body doing their job. Shame on the medical board.

That’s wild that the argument was the nurses should have used “independent judgment” and “should not” have carried out MD orders when I’ve heard of cases where a nurse did not give a medication a patient was allergic to despite MD orders and the argument from the prosecution was the exact opposite. Can’t win when you’re “just a nurse”.

Tell the patient that the pills were contaminated, ask them to refuse thus medicine, circle mar initials with explanation on the back "patient refused contaminated pills", document in the chart.

why weren’t the pills in a blister pack or individually packaged or something? I still think it’s unfair that the nurse got in trouble but everyone else got out of it, but this could’ve easily been avoided.

I remember carrying a $10,000 glass bottle of medication as a student 😅 Enzyme replacement. Was just praying I didn’t drop it. Um yeah waste is waste though.

Never dropped any pills on the floor. But I do remember as a nursing student, a nursing instructor saying that if a pill fell on the floor it can be given, because the GI tract is not sterile.

No one is forced. She had the choice to refuse and chose not to. I’m walking before I do something stupid like that.
