This dynamic only leads to disconnection. Either disconnection between the two of you, or the adult child disconnecting from their unmet emotional needs and learning to internalize emotional neglect of Self. The path to repair and healing is not through finding a positive memory for every negative one. It’s through being strong enough to stand in the negative memories with them, and help set them free from them. This will require you to feel your feelings, hold your pain, and not collapse, while doing the same for your child. For the parents who say they’d lay down in the middle of a road for their child, this calls you to stand in your child’s pain and not let yourself get swallowed whole by parental shame there. I’d argue that is by far and large one of the hardest things a parent can do for their child, and certainly more supportive than disappearing in the name of love. And I get it, for good reason, you do not know how to do this for your adult child. The good news is, you can learn now and still possibly heal and release the pain from the past.
