people who hate the og cast, especially Reeve, don't realise that he IS Orpheus. literally Orpheus's costume is based on Reeve's personal style. he created this character the way we know now. i personally think he perfectly embodies this poor, young boy sent on an impossible quest for his love. he's not charming, he's not confident, he's scared and unsure if he'll make it, but my god he does have heart, hope and his lyre. that's Orpheus and that's how Reeve plays him

I think the reason people actually don’t like Reeves is because they wanted Orpheus to be a confident and charismatic character, but the way I see it Orpheus is someone you can’t help but like because they’re genuine, innocent, and believe in the good in people. I kind of like the awkwardness of Reeve’s Orpheus, it makes him seem genuine. As for his voice, I get it’s not for everyone, but to me I think it fits the character

Reeves plays Orpheus like he IS the first Orpheus in the cycle, innocent and naive. I love how each Orpheus gives a different perspective in their take that feels like a different cycle in the loop.

do people remember reeve did this role for several years? pre-broadway, Broadway, and then the west end? that's like 6 years of toll doing this role. just because his interpretation is different than more recent ones doesn't mean it's bad. the end is still the same. all the orphesuses still turn around 😭

everyone’s got their preferences but the way people talk about reeve make it clear that they’re too fragile to handle any deviation from the super traditional broadway sound. he’s very clearly playing orpheus as a folk singer and he does that style really well. musical theater is going to become very boring if audiences keep believing that you can only be a good singer if you’re belting out notes in the same exact tone as every other tenor out there

While I love the direction they chose to go with Orpheus (naive, optimistic, gentle, genuine), I can’t help but also feel Reeve’s performance fell flat. There are things I can appreciate, but it was the acting I think? He never really looked happy, I didn’t feel yearning or desperation. He just felt scared and nervous the whole time. But he was cast for a reason and I still enjoyed it.

Y’all do remember that this is an adaptation of the original myth right? Meaning it’s the writer’s version of the story. Meaning this version Orpheus can be a young naive boy who reeeaalllyy likes folk music and that’s totally okay. Like whoever you want but you don’t have to be so vile towards the other actors. I personally think this version of Orpheus was young, dumb, and awkward as hell with a big heart and reeves did a great job portraying that

People don’t get that every Orpheus is different because different people have different interpretations of said character like how Reeve has his interpretation it’s there own character when there playing the role (and reeve is my fav but still everyone is entitled to an opinion)

I feel like people don’t enjoy him because he doesn’t have a traditional voice either. They want a tenor who is hooting and hollering and putting on a crazy show when sometimes a unique voice and interesting choices are just as good. People don’t understand that it doesn’t have to be one person is the best and everyone sucks
