okay this image doesn’t really explain this technique well but it’s incredibly helpful! You place your finger on the pencil to “mark” where one feature ends to the tip to measure out proportions via your sight. Their thumb marks where the top of the brow is, and the tip of the pencil is where the forehead ends. If hairline to brow is the same proportion as brow to nose, you check to see if your drawing also has this proportion. you can use the pencil itself to do this by putting your finger where the brow is then moving it down to see where the nose should land. Always extend your arm fully and close one eye when measuring model to ensure consistency! You can do this for literally any part of the body, as long as you find a matching length somewhere else! For example it looks like the right eye of the model (left on screen) is about the same width as the widest part of the nose. Obviously you’d have to check, but if you can find a match then you can apply it to the drawing!

It's actually much more useful to use a piece of string rather than a pencil! The pencil is fine but def is more a movie thing for most art classrooms and spaces. Take the width of your subject before measuring how much it goes into the height of your subject when using a string for anyone who'd like to know 😋
