I looked it up. The "Class Gap": Sociological research highlights that church attendance has remained stable among college-educated groups while dropping significantly among working-class populations over recent decades. It's always bugged me that "church attendence" was thought to be causative and not just a correlation for health and lifespan. Na, I've been to church. There was nothing going on there that would make someone want to stay in this world longer.

So it’s actually community and social safety net, which was once achieved by religion, but can be achieved without.

I would have loved getting to use this last semester, during my religious studies senior capstone that I wrote about religiosity and health/agency outcomes and how they differ depending on the denomination you are part of. (spoiler alert, agency and womens ordination directly correlates to better womens health and life outcomes)

I just attended church because I had to bring a woman that I work with there. What you said at the end makes perfect sense to me. I don’t believe in any of it, but I can see why people go and believe because it’s such a nice sense of community. I kept looking around for someone like me, who didn’t believe, but all I found were brainwashed people. I like the sense of community that church brings, but I don’t believe any of that nonsense.

Would have been better if you gave the numbers on if/how much their life expectancy is shorter when they distrust medicine rather than thrvttust me bro content.

In person community is the hardest thing for atheistic people to find. Being a stranger to reality seems to be a requirement. Have any of you found it?

so it’s not really religion that improved longevity in the first studies mentioned but community!

there was a study about sports influencing longlividy and it basically showed that the biggest boost to longlividy is a team sports because, yep, it gives people community

I've seen this in my own family. They believe the scientific and medical community have ulterior motives.

another aspect is Republicans have been organizing with disabled folks for many decades now, the Dems haven't done the same (not nearly to the same extent anyway). disabilities can shorten lives and a lot of disabled folks have a lot of medical trauma. not sure if that was discussed in the paper

I’m ok with dying a little sooner if it means I don’t have to go to church. I’m good in the community department, so I don’t think it will be a necessary trade off.

I'm older (58F) and my grandparents were very Christian. I'm atheist now. When I was younger, I heard 'see your physician and pray.' The mistrust in medicine started when they merged religion and politics. It wasn't always like this.
