@chemicalkim: ⚠️ People are saying Starbucks put a dangerous silica powder in their drinks and it’s making baristas sick. Let’s actually look at the ingredient label before we panic. #FoodScience #LearnOnTikTok #TodayILearned #Chemistry #debunked
I doubt a barista is making it a few times a shift. They are breathing it in 8 hours a day cus that powder is moved, opened, scooped constantly. Also, are you trying to sell us on caking agent as something we should be ok to put in our bodies?? Just cus it’s in everything doesn’t mean it’s good for us to ingest.

yeah, but you’re disregarding that people still get short-term irritation, and to say that it isn’t dangerous to inhale powder is just wrong and the issue is that Starbucks isn’t providing masks so you want someone to bring a mask to mix a product that a store is providing why can’t Starbucks provide that mask

so many of my peers and coworkers are getting dry throt from the powder. we are constantly making the drink many time in a shot time. the powder us physically in the air and so msny of us are already feeling sick just from the powder. this hasn't been a problem till the blending powder.

My doctor says that there is no such thing as a safe and ingestible silica. So I’ll stick with that

Is Starbucks going to supply the masks? N95 respirators are not cheap

If this helps: Scooping powder a few times a shift doesn’t create a dust cloud like grinding stone does or the same lung damaging silica. Even generously assuming a dusty scoop-and-pour job kicks up something like 0.5 mg/m3 of total airborne powder particles (already a high estimate for careful food service handling, compare to flour mill studies), and silica is 2% of that, you get roughly 10 micrograms per cubic meter of silica in the air. That’s already a fifth of the lung cancer causing crystalline silica Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), and again, it’s the wrong kind of silica to even count toward that limit.

I inhaled it for 2 seconds today around 8am. It's currently 11pm and my throat still hurts. I had to cancel my singing lessons this week because I wasn't able to practice due to the severe irritation it causes me. 😭 One of my coworkers lost her voice, my throat literally feels like it's closing up from it ( i have allergies so I know what it's like for my throat to close up). We can't wear masks because we need accommodations and they will try their hardest to not accept it.

definitely hear what you’re saying, but also, idk how I would feel if I walked into a Starbucks or anywhere that serves food and drinks and the staff were wearing masks. I probs would not be ordering anything.

I can’t tag you in all the videos of people complaining about how they feel because of privacy settings. How convenient.

What exactly counts as “high volume dust exposure”? If a barista is making these drinks 8 hours a day over the course of weeks..does that not count? Have you seen the level of dust getting into the air from them scooping the powder? From blending the drinks? Etc.

Regardless, we shouldn’t disregard how people feel from any type of exposure that’s given minimal or not.
