the fact that Hokum and the Odyssey are as well reviewed as they are makes me think this as well. Neither is actually particularly good, but they are executed technically well.

I just think most movie critics are simple. Ebert gave Fight Club a negative review because he thought audiences were too stupid to grasp the philosophy and would instead copy the movie and just start pounding each other.

He stole his girlfriends grandfathers watch, shes rightfully upset, then he tries to steal it again but gets caught and his ears cut up. True low point for the character. Then he wakes up and they just give him the watch so shes happy now even though he still stole it, and his hearing is actually BETTER now because they cut it up, therefore happy ending

I think sometimes a basic story or story with no substance get a pass if the other apsects of the filmmaking is top notch. At least for me it does not ruin the experience and a film can definitely be 10/10 without an outstanding story, it is a visual media after all.

i think these are true but i more-so think that the movie fundamentally failed in a deeper/different way for this to have occurred to you. like i didnt find it particularly mind blowing or anything but because i still found it engaging/entertaining enough, this didnt occur to me at all (personally). but also i have a tolerance for what i like to call “things we have to do for the hero’s journey”, and this movie was very much pulled forward by it’s adherence to that structure more than much of anything to do with character

I think this is a rare miss for you. Loved this film. The way I read it is the guy doesn’t have a thriving security business - he’s a bottom feeder with the “new rich” clients, the ones who don’t know how to be rich. His business is average because all he sells them is video camera systems but he aspires to sell them the safes. So for him the help of the Tuner is a win-win because he pockets some extra coin for the safe contents and the owners assume it’s someone closer to the them that’s done the safe. I really enjoyed this film.
