I loved how Nolan built up the attack on Troy as an exciting battle but cut it off. Then returned to it later to showcase it as what it was: a terror attack.

I just commented about my take on Agamemnon’s poster showing his gold spine. 100% agree. It reminds me of invertebrates, the sly, spineless creatures. The spine is polished and gilded on the outside, yet the man wearing it has none of that inner strength or moral backbone to begin with, so he has to gild it just to compensate for what he lacks, to make a point. He looks fearsome, regal, but he’s hollow where it counts.

This is such a good breakdown. I think it’s interesting to me how Nolan went from hopeful themes like in Interstellar and the ending of Dunkirk to these more cautionary tones of the destruction of humanity in Oppenheimer and The Odyssey and to an extent Tenet. I think he’s desperately trying to hold up a mirror to humanity itself

This is why I don’t care about people saying it’s a bad adaptation because he didn’t include some parts of the original. In their need to have the Odyssey be perfectly recreated, they missed such intentional messaging in what was changed and in what was focused on

Yes and the Trojan horse is like the atomic bomb that Oppenheimer built. He was so excited about outsmarting his opponent he didn’t take into consideration the cost of his idea.

Also 100% agree on the film being a commentary of the society rn. Without a foundational principle (Zeus’s law), a society is nothing but barbarians. We can’t claim to be better or more superior if our men are still out there killing people and using trickery to take advantage of the weak and of those who know no better. That actually reminds me of how, in the film, Odysseus takes so much pride in plucking his bowstring to warn his prey before killing it. It shows that the Trojan Horse trickery is a collapse of that very foundation, the principled values he has always held dear and taken so much pride in.

YES. This was perfectly articulated, and why I’m finding so much of the discourse about people “not liking it because he didn’t include the famous ‘nobody’ scene from the text to showcase Odysseus’ cleverness” or “he was sanitized since he wasn’t shown having a relationship with Circe / cheating on Penelope” frustrating. Nolan is certainly not without critique, but folks not recognizing the impact of the story being told from this lens is painful. I cannot wait to watch it again.

I think you are on to something. The opening beach scene had this echo of colonizers landing on African shores. And somehow the “jewel” the war was supposed to be about is cast as an African woman. I’m not even sure that was the goal but there are multiple layers clearly to this movie.
