And it was better that way. It made you plan your rotations and finding any limited mobility was important. Landing on the edge of the map was safer but could punish if zone pulled max other side leaving you little looting time. Choosing to take fights in or near edge of zone could cost you everything and you had to decide if it was worth the elimination.
