I find it so incredibly sad that theres a clear pattern of cutting off the noses and eyes. the nose, to cut off breathing since their mouths were closed, and the eyes so they couldnt see the destruction Christians brought upon these previous cultures and religions.

theres a very interesting 25min video essay somewhere on YouTube about this; the crusaders thought that since the statues were made to "humanize" the gods (which they didnt do in Christianity, often making them look a little uncanny), that meant that devils/demons (?) were hiding in the statues. so, to prevent them from escaping, they would carve crosses onto "openings" like noses, mouths, and ears as well as just on their face in general. they did this with ancient egyptian hieroglyphics as well, carving off their feet, which helped (in egyptain mythology) move a soul to the afterlife (without their feet, the soul would stay stuck where they were)

They get rid of the nose because it’s a symbol of ethnicity right? From my understanding the face in general has a lot of forms based on ethnicity but the nose has to be the most prominent, like I know there are the lips and feet but I’m pretty sure the nose was the most prominent change across different cultures.
