@purascans: In 2024, researchers ran the first study to ever test tampons for heavy metals. They found lead in 100% of the tampons tested — 30 products across 14 brands — along with arsenic and cadmium. And switching to organic doesn’t fix it. The study found non-organic tampons tended to carry more lead, while organic ones carried more arsenic. Every category had a toxic metal in it. What makes tampons different from most exposures is the route: vaginal tissue is highly vascular and absorbs substances far more directly than skin, and this is a product used for hours, thousands of times over a lifetime. The average lead level measured came out to roughly 24 times the FDA’s limit for lead in bottled water. The finding was serious enough that the FDA opened a formal investigation into metals in tampons. Until this study, no one was ever required to test for them — the product had been sold, unchecked, for decades — and scientists are only now measuring how much crosses into the body.
