My 12+14 year old in Winnipeg do this with their friends! They bike to the outdoor community pool and go swimming! A lot of the city actually still does have a big community/it takes a village feel for raising kids, and you see them out riding, playing, swimming. Winnipeg "feels" a lot smaller than it actually is, as it's the 6th largest by population in Canada!

I love it! I have a bike with a dynamo light like that and I love it. If you need bike parts or even just advice or info, the folks at Black Arrow Cycles in downtown Kitchener are the best in town, hands down.

My grandfather grew up in Saskatoon and he tells me stories about him and a group of neighbourhood brothers that would jump on the train to go visit other parts of Sask and their parents never knew! They'd just jump on as it passed and ride to another town and hope they could catch a train back.

Gen X was like this too. through the 80s a group of us kids rode up and down our rural road and who knew whose mom would make us lunch, but we would be pedaling all day.

I had that style lights on one of my first bikes. they can work... but they do create quite a bit of friction, and their biggest issue, is that if you are at a stop light, not moving, your lights are off.
