“My embryo is a Grade 2. Is that bad?” Not necessarily, and embryo grading is one of those parts of IVF that can create a huge amount of anxiety when you don’t know what the numbers and letters actually mean. The first thing to understand is that not every IVF clinic uses exactly the same grading system. You might hear Grade 1, Grade 2 or Grade 3, while another clinic might describe an embryo as 4AA, 5AB, 3BB and so on. These grading systems are used by embryologists to describe how an embryo looks and develops in the laboratory. They are important, but an embryo grade is not a pregnancy prediction. Embryologists use morphology and development to help assess and prioritise embryos, but there are many other factors involved in whether an embryo ultimately implants and results in a healthy pregnancy. And importantly, embryos with lower morphological grades can still result in healthy babies. So please don’t compare your embryo grade with somebody else’s without even knowing whether you’re comparing the same grading system or clinical situation.
