Some women weighed only 42 kg, yet carried a 98 kg ammunition crate on their shoulders. Some captured U.S. pilots alive. The women of the Ngu Thuy Artillery Unit played a role in defending Vietnam’s coastline. And in May 1966, coastal militiawoman Hà Thị Nhiên from Hải Hậu was photographed carrying a fragment of a downed U.S. aircraft. They were never remembered for their size, but for their courage, resilience, and willingness to sacrifice. As Vietnam approaches War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day on July 27, we honor and remember the soldiers, martyrs, and countless ordinary people who gave their youth, and in many cases their lives, for the country’s independence and peace.
