THE SIREN ARCHIVE — RECOVERED REEL 110 [ THE ODYSSEY — RECOVERED 16mm FOOTAGE 1987 ] The voices on this 1987 tape match no known dialect. Nobody could translate them. In 1987, an audio engineer named Petros Vlachos working freelance in Athens was hired to clean a set of production recordings for a film he was told had already wrapped. The dialogue tracks, he noted in a private log recovered from a family estate in 2019, "contained a layer beneath the actors' voices — women singing, in a language my colleagues and I could not place in any Mediterranean linguistic family, ancient or modern." He was instructed to leave it in the final mix. He asked why. He was not given an answer. What the footage contained was 28 minutes shot on a rented vessel in open water off the coast of Zakynthos, following a man tied to a mast, refusing to look away from something the camera never fully showed. The ship's captain, hired locally, quit before the shoot wrapped and left no forwarding contact. The Odyssey pilot aired on a cable channel in Athens, April 11th 1987. Runtime: 28 minutes. Broadcast at 2:19am. Three listeners called the station describing the same detail — hearing their own names spoken faintly beneath the dialogue, though the names given differed for each caller. Vlachos's audio log has entries for the full production. The entry for the final mixing session is four words, in his own handwriting, that he later said he did not remember writing. He never worked in film sound again. #lostmedia #theodyssey #tomhollandedit #1980saesthetic #darkfantasy
