Fishing in the Hudson River and Raritan Bay is part of New York and New Jersey’s comeback story. But a new natural gas pipeline threatens to stir up toxic chemicals like mercury, PCBs, and arsenic — undoing decades of cleanup. Did you know you can catch fish and crabs from the Hudson and Raritan Bay? Whether it’s safe to eat them depends on who you are, where you fish, and what species you keep. Both New York and New Jersey publish seafood safety guides each year — showing which fish are safe to eat and which you should release, because some parts of the bay still carry contaminants from decades ago, like mercury and PCBs. There was once a time where the idea of fishing in this river was unthinkable. In the 1970’s there used to be tar in the water off the beaches of Staten Island. But New York and New Jersey have spent billions over the past 50 years to make NY Harbor and the Hudson River Estuary cleaner. There’s currently a proposal for a new natural gas pipeline to span from Hunterdon, Somerset and Middlesex counties to the Raritan Bay, Staten Island and the Rockaways. The project could disturb the bay floor and potentially release the old pollutants – arsenic, mercury, lead, and PCBs - back into the water we’ve worked so hard to clean. Our coastal economies depend on clean water. And it’s not just for fun, this is also a source of free food. Nearby communities deserve to breathe clean air and drink clean water. New Jersey still has to issue an air-quality permit, with a public hearing scheduled for this Thursday November 13, 2025.
