I don’t work in the ED (yet, I’m highly considering it) but I feel like this is similar to the patients finally coming up to the floor and then getting mad at me bc they “haven’t ate or drank in 3 days” like.. you’ve been in the hospital for 5 hours, what you did before you got here is not my fault

I took my daughter for a belly ache and possible metal shavings in her eye. There was a level 1 trauma and a stroke alert while we were there, I was just thanking my Jesus that it wasn't us.

My hospital houses the states's only burn ICU as well as one of the neuro ICU, I've had patients get mad at me because their case was bumped due to someone needing ACTUAL BRAIN SURGERY

as a paramedic i have to take people where they want to go. however ill tell them “i don’t think taking a bed at a level 1 trauma is necessary. you’re not critical and we can go to this hospital instead.” they get offended. babe you don’t need an ambulance either.

And then by the time they get to me and have their CT, they’re like “I can leave now right?” You’ll call with results?” Like no dude cause you’re supposed to be here for an emergency that couldn’t wait? This isn’t an all you can request bar and then you get to go when you feel like it. You get to wait for results bc if you’re having an emergency then the doc needs to make sure you aren’t dying before you leave. If you just wanted a CT then you should have went through your PCP. You came to the ER so now you get the full ER work up.

I was coding a pt and in the room next us the pt stood outside the whole time bc she had her call light on for a while and no one came to give her water. (Angry at the nurse. She hadn’t had anything to drink all day).

As a paramedic I remind patients of this allllll the time. They insist on the trauma center, I try to dissuade them, then they get there and huff when it’s busy. “Why am I still waiting?” “Because here you’re competing with every local trauma, stroke, peds, OB, and cardiac patient who HAS to come here for attention”
