My headcanon: The only reason Percy was able to even get the tattoo is the first place is because hes the son of both Posiedon and Neptune. If he were truly 100% Greek, I think his entire being wouldve rejected the tattoo and he would have not been able to even bear it.

Ok, headcanon time! So during the event of ToA, Percy's mark burned, not enough to really notice at first, but over time it started to hurt worse. Nico also dealt with those effects as someone who had spent too much time in New Rome and was therefore forced to have the mark since having an outsider inside the camp was too risky with the recent loss of their praetor. The idea is that, as Greek warriors, they were never meant to bear the mark of a Roman. So now, anytime something involving the Romans badly affects CHB, the marks will burn, signifying the fact that they were never meant to be there. There was more to this, I just forgot what it was.

but you're missing the point of the tattoo!!! In ancient Rome soldiers came from everywhere in the empire; they can't simply be categorized because of their blood (as the greeks, that in ancient times all came from the same region basically) because they were all different since the beginning: the tattoo is the mark of a belonging, the desire to be part of something bigger than your origins - the legion.
