Train your lower body. Lower body strength is what lets you climb terrain with ease. Alongside your compound lifts, add single-leg exercises. That’s what hiking actually demands. 3. Add runs to build your engine. Targeted cardio raises your stamina and builds the aerobic base so you’re not huffing and puffing on the way up. 4. Fuel properly. Eat well the night before and the morning of, and hydrate before you head up. If you struggle on a hike, treat it as a signal. This should be a normal part of active daily living, and staying capable of it is part of taking ownership of your health.
