She got behind the wheel of her father’s Porsche 911 Carrera without permission and drove at a speed of more than 160 km/h. On toll road 241, she cut off a Honda Civic, lost control of the car, crossed the dividing strip and crashed into the concrete booth of the toll collection point. The girl died on the spot. Toxicological examination showed that there were traces of cocaine in her body, no alcohol was found. Officers of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) took pictures of the scene of the accident according to the regulations. Later, two employees admitted that they had forwarded these photos to their colleagues - and as a result, the footage got on the Internet. The photos were extremely shocking: due to the severity of the accident, parents were not even allowed to identify their daughter’s body. The appearance of pictures on the network caused a huge scandal. The Ketsuras family faced harassment: they were sent photos by e-mail, including with mocking captions. Fake «tribute pages» appeared on the Internet, where these frames were posted. The family tried to get the photo deleted, hired a reputation management company, went to court. In 2012, CHP concluded an agreement with the family - relatives received about $2.37 million in compensation. The Department made an official apology and tightened the internal rules to prevent the situation from happening again. Because of the car that had the accident and the viral spread of Nikki’s photo on the Internet, she was called «Porsche Girl». History is also often cited as an example of the «Streisand effect»: attempts to delete photos only contributed to their further spread.
