Here’s what the police statement says about Aya’s case: Aya’s wife told police that after Aya returned to the United States following a six-month trip to The Gambia, he began behaving differently. He wanted her and their two-year-old son to take a "spiritual bath," but she refused. According to the statement, Aya then started screaming and swearing, demanding to know why she would not bathe with their child. Fearing for her safety because of what she described as Aya’s altered mental state and unpredictable behavior, she took their son outside to her car. Aya followed them outside holding a hammer. She called the police, and Aya left the hammer at the residence before walking away. Aya told his wife that he did not want the police involved and asked her not to tell anyone what had happened. She later told officers that Aya did not physically harm her or their son, and that he did not make any threats. On July 21, Aya went to the Oshkosh Police Department and asked to be deported to The Gambia because of problems with his wife. He told officers that after returning from The Gambia, he had an argument with his wife that resulted in police being called. He said he was arrested and later bailed out by his brother. Aya told police that after his release, he traveled to Seattle. When he returned, his wife told him she no longer wanted to continue their marriage. He said that his marriage was the reason he came to the United States. According to Aya, when he asked his wife to buy him a flight ticket back to The Gambia, she refused. He then asked officers to help deport him. The officer, who was interrogating him, explained that he did not have the authority to deport him. Aya then asked if the officer could contact the Gambian embassy on his behalf, but the officer advised him to do so himself. Aya then left the police department. Later, while his wife was leaving the house to visit a friend, she saw Aya outside smoking a cigarette. She told him that he either needed to get help or return to The Gambia. She also told police that Aya was standing in front of the residence, throwing chairs at the house and damaging the property. After his arrest, Aya told police that the main issue was not that he was angry with his wife, but that she was the reason he came to the United States and that he did not have a job. He said his wife told him she no longer felt safe around him. Aya also told investigators that before starting the fire, he sat in his car and called his mother, telling her she was his last hope.
